My dear friends,
The second precept under the seventh point in Geshe Chekawa's Mind Training in Seven Points is:
This precept advises us to address any obstacles, whether external or internal, by focusing our mind on a single intention: Bodhicitta, the "Awakening Mind" of love, compassion and wisdom. By focusing on this one thought, we train our mind to remain steadfast in the face of distractions and challenges.
This situation is an application of the previous precept, "Practice all activities by means of one," which teaches us to integrate our entire practice around a single, unifying principle – bodhicitta. This means that every action, thought, and word should be infused with love, compassion, and the intention of cultivating wisdom for the benefit of others as well as ourselves.
By consistently bringing our mind back to the single thought of bodhicitta, we train ourselves to remain focused and capable in the face of life's inevitable distractions, enabling us to advance toward the third measure of progress, "One is trained if one is capable, even when distracted."
How to Cultivate This Capability
- Consistent Practice: Establish a daily routine of meditation and reflection on bodhicitta. This consistency strengthens your ability to return to this thought in moments of distraction.
- Mindful Living: Integrate mindfulness into all aspects of your life. Whether you are working, interacting with others, or relaxing, keep the thought of bodhicitta present.
- Compassionate Responses: Make a conscious effort to respond to challenges with love, compassion and wisdom, for others and yourself equally. This trains your mind to default to compassionate thoughts and actions, even when distracted.
Through the diligent practice of focusing on a single, unifying thought of bodhicitta, we can overcome obstacles and distractions on the Bodhisattva path. This practice not only aids in personal spiritual development but also contributes to the well-being of all beings. By embodying this principle in our daily lives, we move closer to the realization of our highest potential and the fulfillment of our spiritual aspirations.
