Joyful Thoughts

My dear friends,

The first Measure of Having Transformed One's Thoughts, in Geshe Chekawa's Mind Training in Seven Points, is:

One is always accompanied by only joyful thoughts.

To cultivate a mind that is always accompanied by joyful thoughts is to develop an unwavering inner serenity. This state is not dependent on external circumstances but arises from a profound inner transformation. By training our mind to find joy in every moment, we align ourselves with the essence of true happiness and peace.

Gladly do I rejoice in the virtue
That relieves the misery of all those in unfortunate states
And that places those with suffering in happiness.
- Shantideva, Bodhisattvacharyavatara, III(1)

Rejoicing in the virtue that alleviates the suffering of others is a powerful practice. It shifts our focus from self-centered concerns to the well-being of all beings. By celebrating the goodness that brings relief and happiness, we contribute to a more compassionate and interconnected world.

I rejoice in that gathering of virtue that is the cause for Awakening.
I rejoice in the definite freedom of embodied creatures from the miseries of cyclic existence.
- Shantideva, Bodhisattvacharyavatara, III(2)

Celebrating the virtues that lead to enlightenment fosters a deep sense of joy. Recognizing the liberation from the cycles of suffering instills hope and inspiration. This joy is not just personal but extends to all sentient beings, as we rejoice in their journey towards freedom and happiness.

I rejoice in the Awakening of the Buddhas
And also in the spiritual levels of their Sons.
- Shantideva, Bodhisattvacharyavatara, III(3)

The Awakening of the Buddhas and their spiritual successors is a source of immense joy. Their realization and the path they illuminate offer guidance and reassurance. By rejoicing in their achievements, we honor the profound impact of their wisdom and compassion on the world.

And with gladness I rejoice
In the ocean of virtue from developing an Awakening Mind
That wishes all beings to be happy,
As well as in the deeds that bring them benefit.
- Shantideva, Bodhisattvacharyavatara, III(4)

Rejoicing in the virtues of developing an Awakening Mind and the actions that benefit others creates a ripple effect of positivity. This joy is expansive, embracing the well-being and happiness of all beings. It encourages us to engage in altruistic deeds and cultivate a mind of loving-kindness.

[Love] does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth.
- 1 Corinthians 13:6

True love finds joy in truth and righteousness. It does not celebrate harm or falsehood but rejoices in integrity and honesty. This scriptural wisdom reminds us that the foundation of joyful thoughts is rooted in ethical living and sincere relationships.

If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love,
just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love.
I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you,
and that your joy may be complete.
- John 15:10-11

Abiding in divine love through keeping commandments brings a profound and complete joy. This joy is not fleeting but enduring, rooted in a deep connection with the divine. It is a joy that transforms and uplifts, providing a sense of purpose and fulfillment in our spiritual journey.

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice.
Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near.
- Philippians 4:4,5

Constantly rejoicing in the immeasurable divine abodes (Brahmaviharas) of love, compassion, joy and peace cultivates a spirit of gentleness. This joy is a practice of faith, an ongoing celebration of the nearness of salvation, and an invitation to embody gentleness and kindness in our interactions with others.

May these reflections inspire us to cultivate joyful thoughts and rejoice in the virtues that bring happiness and peace to all beings. Let us work to transform our minds and hearts, embracing a life filled with joy, compassion, and wisdom.
