My dear friends,
The fifth precept under the seventh point in Geshe Chekawa's Mind Training in Seven Points is:
This precept refers to guarding both the precepts of mind training and the commitment to Bodhicitta .
The Two Points to be Guarded
- The Precepts of Mind Training: These are the specific practices and commitments outlined in the mind training teachings, which include transforming adverse conditions into the path of enlightenment and applying the instructions to one's daily life. These precepts guide practitioners in cultivating a mind of compassion and wisdom.
- The Commitment to Bodhicitta: Bodhicitta is the "Awakening Mind" that comprises both aspirational bodhicitta (the heartfelt desire to attain enlightenment for the sake of others) and engaged bodhicitta (actively engaging in practices that lead to enlightenment).
Why They Are More Precious Than Life Itself
- Ultimate Purpose of Life: From the perspective of the bodhisattva path, the ultimate purpose of life is to achieve enlightenment and to help all sentient beings achieve the same. The precepts of mind training and the commitment to bodhicitta directly support this ultimate purpose, making them more valuable than mere physical survival.
- Foundation of Spiritual Progress: These two points are the foundation upon which spiritual progress is built. Without a firm commitment to bodhicitta and adherence to mind training precepts, true spiritual advancement and the realization of enlightenment are impossible. They ensure the integrity and direction of one's spiritual path.
- Transcendence of Self-Concern: The path of a Bodhisattva involves transcending self-concern and embracing the welfare of all beings. By guarding these two points, one ensures that their actions are aligned with the greater good, moving beyond the limitations of self-centeredness and achieving a profound transformation of character and purpose.
- Source of Inner Strength and Resilience: Holding these commitments provides inner strength and resilience in the face of life's challenges. The precepts of mind training offer practical methods for transforming adversity into spiritual growth, while the commitment to bodhicitta instills a sense of boundless compassion and purpose.
By guarding the precepts of mind training and the commitment to bodhicitta more preciously than one's life, practitioners prioritize the spiritual goals that transcend physical existence, ensuring that their lives are dedicated to the highest form of service and awakening. This dedication not only benefits the individual but also contributes to the welfare of all beings, aligning with the ultimate aims of both Buddhist and Christian compassion.
