An Algorithm for Spiritual Growth

The path of inner transformation is not only a matter of understanding teachings, but of allowing them to shape the heart and mind. In many contemplative traditions, this unfolds through a natural rhythm: receiving guidance, reflecting deeply, and realizing truth through direct experience. When framed with a clear intention at the beginning and a dedication at the end, even a short period of study or meditation becomes a complete and meaningful practice. What follows is a simple five-step method that can be applied to any teaching.

1. Aspiration: Start by setting a sincere intention. This aligns your practice with compassion and wisdom, giving it direction beyond self-concern.

By learning and practicing this teaching,
may I cultivate wisdom and compassion,
to free myself and all beings from suffering,
and help us all to abide
in lasting peace and genuine joy.

2. Receive the Teaching: Read, listen, or study attentively. Focus on understanding the meaning clearly. At this stage, you are planting seeds. Avoid rushing or skimming. Let the words land in the mind with care.

3. Reflect Deeply: Consider what you have learned. Ask yourself: Is this true? What is it calling me to do and to become? Examine it from different angles until the meaning becomes personal and convincing. This transforms borrowed knowledge into your own understanding.

4. Realize:

5. Dedication: End by dedicating whatever goodness or understanding has arisen. This stabilizes and expands the benefit of your practice.

Whatever understanding or virtue has arisen from this practice,
I dedicate it for the welfare of all beings,
that we may be free from suffering and its causes,
and realize peace, joy, and awakening.

Practiced regularly at each step of the Lam Rim teachings, this simple routine transforms ordinary study into a path of awakening. The beginning intention opens the heart, the middle deepens understanding, and the closing dedication extends the benefit beyond oneself. In time, these steps blend into a single continuous movement of learning, reflection, and realization. Even brief moments of sincere practice, done in this way, gradually reshape the mind toward clarity, compassion, and lasting peace.
