Year B - Nativity of the Lord

And the Word Became Flesh
Frank Wesley, 1923-2002

My dear friends,

In this moment of contemplation, let us reflect on the profound teachings from Titus 2:11-14, as we weave together the wisdom of Christian and Buddhist paths, revealing a tapestry of spiritual depth and universal truth.

For the grace of God has appeared
bringing salvation to all,...
- Titus 2:11

Here, the appearance of God's grace as a source of salvation echoes the Buddhist concept of a Bodhisattva's compassionate vow to liberate all beings. Both traditions emphasize selfless love and compassion as cornerstones for spiritual liberation and collective well-being.

... training us to renounce impiety
and worldly passions,
and in the present age to live lives
that are self-controlled, upright, and godly,...
- Titus 2:12

This teaching resonates with the Buddhist practice of mindful living and ethical conduct (sīla). Both paths advocate for a life of discipline and virtue, guiding us away from harmful desires and towards a harmonious existence rooted in wisdom and compassion.

...while we wait for the blessed hope
and the manifestation of the glory
of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.
- Titus 2:13

The Christian anticipation of the glorious return of Christ mirrors the Buddhist aspiration for the realization of enlightenment. Both embody a profound hope and yearning for a transcendent awakening that transforms our understanding and relationship with all of existence.

He it is who gave himself for us
that he might redeem us from all iniquity
and purify for himself a people of his own
who are zealous for good deeds.
- Titus 2:14

In this, we see the sacrifice of Jesus as a profound act of love, akin to the Bodhisattva ideal of selflessly benefiting others. Both teachings inspire us to engage in good deeds, not just for personal salvation, but for the betterment of all beings in the spirit of universal compassion and love.

As we reflect on these teachings, let us embrace the interconnectedness of these spiritual paths, recognizing the shared journey towards compassion, wisdom, and loving-kindness. May our hearts be open to the universal truths that guide us to a life of virtue and service to all beings.
