the love of God,
and the communion of the Holy Spirit
be with all of you.
- 2 Corinthians 13:13
My dear friends,
On this Trinity Sunday, the Apostle Paul's final blessing to the Corinthians invites us into the living mystery of divine love. These words are not merely a formal benediction. They describe the whole movement of awakening: the boundless compassion that is the source of life, the liberating grace embodied in Christ, and the shared communion of awakened heart and mind that unites beings in wisdom and love. Let us hear this blessing in the spirit of the Bodhisattva path, as an invitation to participate in the transformation of self-centeredness into compassion for all beings.
"The love of God"
The love of God is the inexhaustible compassion that embraces all beings without distinction. Jesus speaks of the Father who causes the sun to rise on both the righteous and the unrighteous. In the language of the Bodhisattva path, this resembles great compassion (mahākaruṇā), the boundless wish that every being be freed from suffering and awaken to fullness of life. Such love does not arise from preference, possession, or attachment. It flows naturally from wisdom that sees the deep interconnectedness of all things.
When we cling tightly to a separate and isolated self, love becomes narrow and fearful. Yet when self-grasping begins to soften, compassion appears more spontaneously. The saints and Bodhisattvas alike discover that divine love is not something acquired from outside. It is the radiance of awakened reality itself. To abide in the love of God is to let one's heart become wide enough to hold the joys and sorrows of the whole world.
"The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ"
The grace of Christ is compassion entering directly into the suffering of the world. Jesus does not remain distant from fear, betrayal, poverty, violence, or grief. He walks among those who suffer and offers healing, forgiveness, and companionship. In this way he reveals the path of the Bodhisattva, who willingly enters the confusion of the world in order to guide beings toward liberation.
Grace is the transforming power of self-emptying love. On the cross, Christ answers hatred without returning hatred. He absorbs violence without surrendering to violence. This is a profound example of the spiritual training that transforms adversity into the path of awakening. We are saved from the prison of ego not through prideful self-effort alone, but through opening ourselves to the liberating activity of compassion. Grace softens the hard heart and gives courage to love again.
"The communion of the Holy Spirit"
The communion of the Holy Spirit is the shared life of awakened heart and mind among beings. The Spirit is not merely an abstract doctrine. It is the living presence of wisdom and compassion moving through human relationships, communities, and acts of mercy. In the language of Mahayana Buddhism, this resembles bodhicitta, the awakening mind that seeks enlightenment for the benefit of all beings.
The word communion speaks of participation and shared belonging. Whenever fear gives way to understanding, whenever forgiveness overcomes resentment, whenever people gather in sincere compassion, the Spirit is active. At Pentecost, frightened disciples became courageous servants of love. In the same way, when bodhicitta awakens within us, the boundaries of self-concern begin to dissolve. We discover that our lives are inseparable from the lives of others, and that wisdom flowers most fully through compassionate service.
"...be with all of you."
Paul's blessing does not belong to a spiritual elite. It is offered to all. The love of God, the grace of Christ, and the communion of the Holy Spirit are not possessions to hoard. They are living realities meant to flow through us into the world. The Bodhisattva vow likewise refuses private liberation. One walks the path together with all beings, carrying one another through suffering toward awakening.
As we contemplate these blessings on Trinity Sunday, may we open ourselves to boundless compassion, embody liberating love in our daily actions, and participate in the awakened communion that unites all beings. May the grace of Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit become living realities within us, for the healing of the world.
